As the child of a Jewish father, Renate Aris lived through the National Socialist era in Dresden. Thanks to the bombing of the city, she escaped the planned deportation on 16 February 1945. Alongside Herbert Wagner, who describes the expulsion from what is now the Czech Republic after the end of the war, and Hartmut Topf, a descendant of the Topf & Sons family, she is one of ten contemporary witnesses who have their say in the film. In the film, they talk about how much the Second World War still influences their lives today.
